WordPress vs Squarespace: which is right for you?
WordPress and Squarespace are both popular ways to build a website, but they are very different. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
Squarespace is an all-in-one platform. You pay a monthly fee (around £12 to £33) and get hosting, templates, and a drag-and-drop editor. It is great for simple sites where you want to get online quickly without much technical knowledge. The templates look good and it is hard to break anything.
WordPress is more powerful but more complex. It is free to use, but you need separate hosting, and building a custom site usually requires a developer. The upside is that WordPress can do almost anything. Custom designs, plugins for booking systems, ecommerce, membership areas. There are very few limits.
For most small businesses, we recommend WordPress with a professional developer. Squarespace is fine for a basic portfolio or simple blog, but it hits limitations quickly. You cannot customise it deeply, SEO options are limited, and you are locked into their platform.
With WordPress, you own your site. You can move it to any hosting provider, customise it however you like, and add features as your business grows. With Squarespace, you are renting. If they increase prices or remove a feature you rely on, you are stuck.
The one exception: if you need a site this week with zero budget for a developer, Squarespace is a reasonable short-term option. Just know that you will probably outgrow it within a year or two and need to start again with a proper WordPress site.
